Efficient container handling in a limited space

Challenge: Finding lift trucks suitable for tight spaces and stackers able to handle more than one platform, and increasing the availability of lifting equipment.

Solution: Specialized lift trucks designed for smaller areas, reach stackers with higher lifting capacities and outreaches, and TRUCONNECT® remote monitoring.


Novorossiysk, on the northeastern coast of the Black Sea, is home to Novoroslesexport, a large commercial port. The company has two specialized terminals dedicated to container and timber handling.

The space is limited, which is a typical challenge for ports. This restriction imposes strict requirements for container loading efficiency and demands specific lifting facilities. The Novoroslesexport timber terminal needed lift trucks with a short wheelbase for higher speeds when working in tight spaces, and raised ground clearance for smooth maneuvering in the stacking area.

At the container terminal, it became necessary to increase the availability of lifting equipment. In addition, the rail container terminals required bigger reach stackers that could handle more than one platform. These reach stackers had to have higher lifting capacities and outreaches, and the ability to lift heavier loads.

Getting things done together

Novoroslesexport was the first commercial harbor in Russia to acquire a railroad stacker with a 45-ton lifting capacity at 6400 mm outreach to take fully laden containers from the second rail track. In total, Konecranes has delivered 22 lift trucks and reach stackers, as well as four terminal tractors.

Increasing the availability of lifting equipment was done by means of TRUCONNECT® remote monitoring. It provided the company with data on tire pressure, abnormal shocks, average fuel consumption and average traveling speed.

The cooperation between Novoroslesexport and Konecranes started in 2002 and has continued since then.

“It is important to emphasize that Konecranes’ lift trucks comprise 70% of our fleet so far. Konecranes takes into account all our requirements for hoisting equipment. What is equally significant is that the company uses its best efforts to fulfill their obligations in terms of equipment delivery times and order completion,” states Likholet.
